In 1940, two Americans, brothers Maurice & Richard McDonald, set up a hamburger stand next to their movie theatre near Pasadena, California. In 1948, they had the idea of making it self-service and stressing the quality of the hamburger served there. Four years later they were known throughout southern California, where they had restaurant equipment, who offered to sell franchises for them in the rest of the country. In 1962, when there were more than 200 branches, Kroc bough the McDonalds’ share of the business form $2.7 million. A decade later, Kroc had amassed a fortune estimated at $500 million. Today, there are over 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants in more than 60 countries.

For The Record. Your stomach is expandable, like a soft-sided carryall. When it has no food in it, it’s shaped like a big capital J. When full, it takes the shape of a boxing glove. The average stomach, when filled to the hit, can hold about 1.2 liters (2.5 pints) of food.
