Year of the Tiger

Would it be a better year in this Year of the Tiger for the Philippines? Or would it be a case of the tiger once again devouring hopes and aspirations of the Filipino people? Nobody knows really. But one thing is for sure. The Filipino people have not stopped hoping for a better life. For many, the challenges are greater than the others. Let’s take the case of those who lost their loved ones from the devastating calamities that hit the country last year. Thousands have been left homeless, and they can only hope that they’d find a roof over their heads.

There are those who truly believe that this year’s presidential elections may usher in an administration that will be able to response to the needs of the people. They can’t be blamed.

The incumbent administration of outgoing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has utterly lost the trust of the citizenry. A recent survey showed that its popularity rating has sunk to the lowest ever level at negative 23 percent. One may say it doesn’t really matter for President Arroyo. She has a few months left in office, but then again, she’s running for a seat in Congress at her home province of Pampanga.

On the upcoming presidential battle on May 10 polls, the race is definitely starting to heat up. Dirt is flying among the candidates and one can expect it to get dirtier as the weeks go by.

Whether a new administration will indeed make a difference to the lives of Filipinos is anybody else’s guess. Whatever comes, Filipinos are expected to still have a laugh at the misfortunes thrown in their way. After all, there isn’t much choice left.
