Summer is here! Vancouverites are in their summer moods these days. New and interesting things to indulge with like sports (swimming, biking, golfing), open market shopping and restaurant hopping. Yes, tasting something different, a blend of new flavors offered in the recently concluded event at Eat! Vancouver, the biggest consumer show held at the Convention Centre. New Asian Family brand of sauces like bottled Wasabi Sauce caught the attention of homemakers who would like to serve something different to the family’s dinner table.

It comes in handy when grilling any type of fish like Salmon, Halibut Steak, Tuna. The sauces featured popular Asian flavors which are great for summer barbeques and salads.
Bite! Vancouver was another hit. Regular visitors of the show claimed that they were able to sample some food fare missed from last year’s event. An interesting mini buns sandwich offered by Mochika’s Restaurant, a Peruvian restaurant located at West 5th Avenue. Guess what’s the filling of this mini bun? Not hamburger but slices of grilled pork (Lechong Kawali!). Yes another twist to your meal, next time, fill your Aling Mary’s Pandesal with slices of Lechon with Crackling (Crunchy) Skin, dot with Mang Tomas Lechon or Jufran/Mafran Ketchup, layers of lettuce, thin slices of fresh cucumber and pickles. Let me know how it tastes! Well, we’ll never go wrong with our very own famous Lechon!

In June, the Filipinos in Vancouver celebrated the 113th Years of Philippine Independence with the Philippine Flag Raising Ceremony held at Vancouver City Hall. Mayor Robertson of Vancouver recognized this special event by gathering the Filipino Community led by Mr. Rey Fortaleza of ReyFort Media Group with representatives from different Filipino organizations like MultiCultural Helping House and leaders who came with their elegant Philippine’s famous Barong Tagalog for men and Baro’t Saya, Mestiza dress, Kimona for women . A Plague of Recognition was given by the Mayor himself. Of course, the celebration was capped with a salu-salo (Lunch Treat) courtesy of ReyFort Media Group. ‘Indigenised’ (native but influenced/ infused with or by other culture or country) filipino dishes especially prepared by our suking (favorite/ regular ) caterer and restaurant, Josephine’s at Main Street, Vancouver. Pancit Guisado, Lumpiang Prito at Crunchy Empanada were super delicious, thank you!
