Vancouver, B.C. - Camille Cacnio’s willingness to face the consequences of her actions is now fulfilled with the laying of charges against her in the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot last year. The 21- year old Richmond-resident and a Burnaby man are the latest to be added to a list of 30 people Vancouver police have charged in connection with the riot.
Cacnio was seen in video footage running out of a Black & Lee uxedo shop, over broken glass and around an overturned newspaper box, holding two pairs of men’s dress pants. The UBC biology student issued a 3,500-word public apology four days later that placed much of the blame on “mob mentality.” Excerpts of an editorial we wrote about Cacnio on July 2011 follows:
Rising from the ashes
“The Internet Mob has been swift and vicious in their condemnation and it seems they were prepared to do a lynching, calling for her blood almost.
For what?
For stealing two pairs of pants? They who have been revolted by her act are showing that they are no better if not worst. We wonder if the anger would have been different if Cacnio was not Filipino. Cacnio has been punished more than one can ever think of in similar situations. She has lost her job and friends. But she has kept faith in herself and the possibility of redemption.”
