Fil-Am community seeking elderly in need of Christmas cheer

  • PDF

A nongovernment organization — the Filipino American Community Health Initiative of Chicago (FACHIC) is looking for elderly Filipinos in need of holiday “TLC” (tender love and care). FACHIC’s Parol Program, established in 2009, aims to spread Christmas cheer to the elderly by:
  • sending them Christmas cards;
  • calling them up, or
  •  visiting them at home with gift baskets.
A “parol” is a traditional Filipino Christmas decoration, a colorful five-pointed lantern symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem that guided the wise men to the birthplace of Jesus Christ. If you or someone you know is an older adult who would benefit from FACHIC’s wellness and health assistance offerings, FACHIC would like to connect with you. Those who would like to be part of FACHIC's parol project may call (312) 962-7748 or sending an e-mail to parolseniors@ fachic. org. Aside from its holiday themed activities, FACHIC staff assist the elderly when it comes to their concerns or questions about: housing, prescription medications, Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security/Public Aid, and community resources. FACHIC is a collaborative of community, health professional, and academic leaders united to address Filipino health issues in the Chicago area. (VVP, GMA)
