Fall is the time when Hollywood unleashes its big guns. Good things indeed come the way of the central character in The Sessions, a dynamic small scale independent flick from Fox Searchlight Pictures sure to set an eye moist at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas. Tender is the subject matter of this inspirational story penned by Ben Lewin and also directed by this gifted filmmaker. Heartfelt is the plight of Mark O’Brien. Those less fortunate will be able to relate to the plight of this man, warmly portrayed in an Oscar calibre performance by John Hawkes (The Bone).

Events happening in the news often take years to be transferred onto film. Superb timing comes with the release of Inescapable, a jarring drama from Alliance Films now resonating loudly at the Ridge Theatre.
Conflict appears to be raging across the Muslim world. Against this violent backdrop famed director Ruba Nadda sets forth Inescapable. Set in the present with roots 30 years earlier this drama focuses on the plight of a Canadian called Adib. Like so many others in this democratic bastion Adib arrived from offshore and is impeccably portrayed by top actor Alexander Siddiq.

Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (PG) * * * Coming of Age?

  • PDF
Childhood innocence gets played for laughs in Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, I think the third in the phenomenally successful kids flicks from 20th Century Fox now showing at the Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Cineplex Odeon Theatres across B.C. Parents looking for a “safe” picture to take little tykes to will find Diary to be to their liking. Just like the first two Wimpy Kids movies all the action here centres around the Heffley family, particularly 10 year old something Greg. Consider Greg to be the ultimate nerd and he’s deliciously depicted in all his youthful innocence by Zachary Gordon.
