The Devil Inside (PG)* * Born Bad!

  • PDF

The devil made me do it. That may well have been a popular television slogan from the 60s or 70s in a comedy or variety show. Nothing funny happens in Paramount Pictures latest offering, The Devil Inside. Chilling if not thrilling, this fiendish movie is supposed to be freaking people out at The Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Cineplex Odeon Theatres around B.C. Director William Brent Bell also co-wrote this story and you just know he has The Catholic Church in his sites. Or does he? What we do know is that this tale involves possession of the worst kind. At the heart of the matter is a New York woman named Isabella Rossi. Acted out by Fernanda Andrade the Rossis have a thing about being possessed. Three people die in their home and now it’s up to two do-gooders to find out just why the trio was murdered.

In their quest to find a cure and the reasons this woman is possessed we make the trek to Italy where more danger lurks behind every bend. All the while a camera crew of sorts documents the evil possession that is simmering just below the surface. Expect lots of jittery camera moves a la The Blair Witch Project. This sort of reality programming has also been used to good advantage by Paramount in the Paranormal series and there definitely are some scares evoked.

Fans of movies like The Exorcist will find the exorcism rituals intriguing and the acting off the cuff and rather nonchalant. You can’t really believe the evil stuff going on though there is enough blood and guts moments and satanic rituals to satisfy some followers of the cause.

Short at only 87 minutes The Devil Inside offers only mild scares and not enough real thrills to satisfy most horror addicts. **************
