Pacquiao-Margarito coverage: Commitment to our beloved readers

VANCOUVER – The HBO has kicked off its 24/7 series to promote the 12-round WBC light middleweight championship tussle between Manny Pacquiao and Latino fame Antonio Margarito on November 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Included are video clips detailing the struggle of the 31-year-old Filipino buzzsaw who rose from an obscure pandesal (Filipino bread) vendor to become the hottest prizefighter in the world and the first Asian multi-titlist who became member of the a national legislative assembly (Philippine Congress).

Also, the HBO series features Margarito’s phenomenal ascension to boxing immortality after winning the World Boxing Organization jewels several times and his fall in disgrace and shame after being temporarily terminated from the professional league after loading his fist with a foul substance last year.

The video shows how successful was Pacquiao’s last fight in the same arena early this year when he poleaxed pesky Joshua Clottey for 12 heats that prompted Cowboys Stadium owner Jerry Jones to offer the multi-million arena for the Filipino congressman’s next fight on November 13.

Top Rank chief Bob Arum had heavily credited Jones for the realization of the Pacquiao-Clottey rumble which attracted a record number of paying audience. Arum’s partnership with Jones was considered as one of the biggest boxing news last year as the cavernous Cowboys Stadium was never offered as venue to any boxing promotion; not even big-time heavyweight bouts.

Jones originally wanted to watch the dream Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in his stadium and he repeatedly asserted during our press conferences there that he would give his 100 percent full support to the blockbuster bout.
Although it didn’t happen and might not happen in the future, Jones remains supportive of Arum’s promotion and didn’t raise a whimper when it was Margarito’s name that surfaced after a series of smorgasbord negotiations for Pacquiao’s next opponent.

We in the Team Reyfort Media Group will be covering anew the Pacquiao-Margarito fight as part of our commitment to the reading public since time immemorial. Setting modesty aside, we have been consistent with our coverage of Pacquiao’s big fights in the United States since 2007, and we are extremely proud to represent the Filipino-Canadian community as news entity from the North America.

The special sports event is part and parcel of our major calendar of activities that included, among others, the Philippines Airlines (PAL) Invitational Golf championship in the Philippines, a yearly commitment buttressed by Vancouver’s A-1 golf players with Filipino blood running in their veins.
The Pacquiao-Clottey fight in Arlington in March this year coincided with the launching of our special edition in the Living Today magazine where Pacquiao was the cover story.

We will go to Arlington again with full enthusiasm and optimism to once again bring to our dear readers the kind of sports entertainment that every Fil-Can household in Vancouver and the British Columbia wishes to read about: Manny Pacquiao and his conquest.

We will see if members of the House of Representatives will come in full force to cheer for their colleague, Rep. Manny Pacquiao, in the ringside on November 13. Even when Pacquiao was not yet elected as congressman, many Philippine politicians, mostly lawmakers and local government officials (municipal mayors and barangay captains included) were herded into a special PAL flight from LAX to Dallas to watch the Pacquiao-Clottey match.

We heard that as many as 40 members of the House of Representatives have “committed” to fly to Texas on separate flights and “on our own expenses.”
Some of the newly elected barangay officials allied with Pacquiao are also reportedly coming to Arlington. As long as no taxpayers’ money will be used during the trip, everybody has the right to even make a trip around the world.
