New Nike deal awaits Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Mi­chael Koncz revealed that Nike has some new deals in store for the eight-division world cham­pion. Koncz told the Manila Stan­dard that he talked to executives of Nike’s Corporate Office in their headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon and that they felt the comments by Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Dana White that Nike had dropped Pacquiao were “pretty amusing,” but certainly
not true.

Manny Pacquiao sat down with his chief promoter Bob Ar­um yesterday in General Santos City but they left everything on the table regarding the Filipino boxing icon’s next fight. “We had a very good discus­sion,” said Pacquiao’s chief ad­viser, Mike Koncz, who was at the meeting that took place at around noon and lasted more than two hours. “But we haven’t made any de­cision,” he added. Koncz did not reveal the details of the meeting, and said they all  agreed to keep things from the media.

Donaire to face Mexican Arce

Nonito Donaire will be short of visiting the lion’s den when he re­turns to the ring in Oc­tober. Hall of Fame pro­moter Bob Arum said Donaire will meet Mexi­can four-divison cham­pion Jorce Arce in a 12- round title fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The choice of the Staples Cen­ter as venue is a no-brainer con­sidering Southern California is heavily populated by Mexicans. While the Los Angeles area has a large concentration of Filipinos, it is considered as the second home of Mexicans and Arum is banking on the Hispanics’ strong nationalistic fervor to make the fight a huge success.

Promoter Bob Arum on Monday requested Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto for a full and complete investigation of the scoring of Saturday night’s World Boxing. Welterweight championship fight that led to a dominant Manny Pac­quiao bizarrely losing to American challenger Timothy Bradley by split decision. In a fight most ringside media and the fans thought Pacquiao won by a wide margin, Bradley was picked the winner by judges Duane Ford and C.J. Ross submitted identical scores of 115-113 for Bradley. The third judge, Jerry Roth, saw it 115-113 for Pacquiao.

As fight fans from around the world continue to express their disgust and sadness over the 12-round split decision that took Pacquiao’s crown away and put a snap to the Filipino’s 15-fight win­ning streak spanning seven years, the fighter refused to be swayed by the emotions.

Roach Saw It Coming

LAS VEGAS — Freddie Roach knew something was amiss when ring announcer Michael Buffer de­clared that judge Jerry Roth saw it 115-113 for Manny Pacquiao. “I think Manny had his best per­formance since the Miguel Cotto fight (in 2009) and he clearly won the fight,” said Roach late Satur­day night during the post-fight chat. “When I heard that (Roth’s score of 115-113), I knew some-thing wasn’t right.”
True enough, the next two scores were, for him, even more appalling and outrageous as CJ Ross and Duane Ford had it 115- 113 for Tim Bradley, who was awarded a split decision victory over the heavily-favored Filipino.
