This is a sad story to write, perhaps the addest I have written so far.First, the almost daily coverage of the mpending executions of our three kababayans in China, which finally happened on Wednesday (March 30). And then as I checked before deadline, I learned that John Santiago, the temporary worker suffering from cancer died just four days before on Saturday (March 26) at the Vancouver General Hospital. Four Filipinos, all strangers to each other and separated thousands of miles, dying in foreign lands for the sake of giving life to the loved ones they left behind. Tragically, their quest ended giving up their own. Pablo, Habacon all make us proud As we are touched by the deaths of our kababayans, we also need to celebrate the joys of being recognized by peers for our work. Our congratulations to our colleague – consulting editor Carlito Pablo for getting the award for ‘outstanding journalism’ from Langara College and other institutions. The occasion was to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
On March 21,the world honours memory of the 69 youths in Sharpsville, South Africa who were massacred by police in 1960 during a peaceful demonstration against apartheid. A seasoned journalist before he immigrated to Canada, Carlito has always been an inspiration and a mentor for my own struggle as a self-taught writer to improve my skills. We are proud as a Filipino that one of our own can be as competent.
